Pakistan’s Ranking is Improved by 7

Pakistan has made a positive leap in the fight against corruption. According to the latest report from Transparency International, Pakistan has moved up from the 140th to the 133rd spot among 180 countries in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2023.

This index measures how corrupt a country’s public sector is seen to be, with a score from 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very clean). Pakistan’s score improved slightly, from 27 in 2022 to 29 in 2023.

The chairman of Transparency International in Pakistan, Justice (Retired) Zia Pervez, says this improvement is thanks to better governance and stronger law enforcement. He also mentioned the successful implementation of Transparency International’s recommendations.

However, the report notes that global fight against corruption is moving slowly. Most countries haven’t made significant progress, with the average score stuck at 43 for the past twelve years. Another worrying point is the decline in the effectiveness of justice systems worldwide, as highlighted by the Rule of Law Index.

Countries with lower scores in the Rule of Law Index also tend to have lower CPI scores. This suggests that easy access to justice is crucial in reducing corruption. On a brighter note, Denmark leads the CPI for the sixth year in a row with a high score of 90, followed by Finland and New Zealand.

In comparison, countries facing crises like Somalia, Venezuela, Syria, South Sudan, and Yemen are at the bottom of the list. The report also flags that 23 countries, including Iceland, the Netherlands, and the UK, have reached their lowest scores ever in 2023.

Since 2018, 12 countries have seen a significant drop in their CPI scores, but there’s also a silver lining – eight countries, such as Ireland and South Korea, have shown improvement. This global picture shows the ongoing challenges and progress in the worldwide effort to tackle corruption.
